Types of Fire Insurance in California

There is always the risk of a fire threatening your home, whether you live in the city or a rural area, have an older home or live a brand new home. Even if you don’t cook or use candles, an accident can happen at any time, destroying hundreds of thousands of dollars in property.

That is why people have homeowners’ insurance. This insurance pays for your damages caused to your home by certain events, including fires. However, insurance companies sometimes refuse to cover certain homes, leaving homeowners in a frustrating situation.

The good news is that there are other types of insurance that can protect your home and belongings should a fire occur. While these policies may be more costly than other types of insurance, they are better than nothing.

Why Your Insurance Company May Refuse to Cover You

Insurance companies may refuse to cover a home that is older and has had claims against it in the past. Also, mobile homes may not be eligible for coverage. If you live in an area that is prone to wildfires, is not close to a fire station, has a significant amount of brush or is close to a canyon, then you may be denied coverage as well.

Other Insurance Options

Many homeowners protect their homes with stand-alone plans. “Dwelling fire” coverage covers damage caused by fire, smoke, and explosions. These plans typically cost less than a traditional homeowners’ insurance policy. You can add this type of policy to your existing homeowners’ insurance if you live in a high-risk area. It is a good choice for properties that are older and have a history of claims. This policy is also ideal for vacation homes, which some insurance companies will not insure.

You may also qualify for a Fair Access to Insurance Requirements (FAIR) plan. These plans are backed by the government and allow you to have insurance on your home. However, they can be pricey and they offer little coverage. In California, these plans do not cover water damage or theft.

There are also hybrid plans that combine a FAIR plan with a traditional policy. For example, fire damage may be covered under a FAIR plan, while water damage, smoke damage, and liability may be covered by another policy.
